The Compressed Audio Age: An Update

Well I think it will end up taking forever at my current rate. I also discovered that my wife has some truly horrible taste in music (subjective of course). I of course have only the most discriminating musical tastes, why else would I have three Freezepop albums?

I decided, when I ripped my CDs onto the computer, to accept Windows format since it was so easy to just keep feeding CDs into the machine and letting Windows Media Player convert them and add them to its library. It didn't take too long. Of course, you may have more CDs than I do.

At one time I actually had a FreeBSD program that would automatically rip a disc when you put the CD in, then eject it when it was done. It worked great unless the CD had a data track on it. Then it would get stuck. It also had some other limitations, and even though I have the code still I no longer have a BSD machine with a cd player in it. Doing this by hand now, I really do long for it though, just not enough to buy another machine (or CD player).

As far as Windows goes I just wanted the format to be universally playable, and MP3s seem to be the current standard for that. Maybe ogg will win in the future, but for now.

Use iTunes. Windows media player is evil
I think you can change the default to mp3 even, if you want that instead of aac, however aac is better quality compression for the same bitrate. Also it will start ripping automatically when you insert a cd.

Also ogg is never going to win, sorry. AAC is superior to MP3, but MP3 is probably going to be the main format for awhile still.

Coincidentally, Freezepop is playing this weekend at Yuri's Night at NASA in Mountain View. (http://ynba.org/2008/music.php) Fun! Fashion! Flights of Fancy! And Freezepop.

Yeah--Yuri's Night looks like good, geeky fun. I have to confess I had never heard of Freezepop until I read your entry. Then noticed the coincidence. So I'll check 'em out.

Cool. Let me know what you think. With a comment here preferably. :)
