Aliases

When I first started posting I noticed that chikuru used initials to talk about people in his real life. This gave them some anonymity as only mutual friends would be able to figure out who he was talking about.

I thought this was a good idea and have generally used it myself. I then noticed that eds3 used aliases for his friends. I really like that, so have decided to start using aliases myself in future posts.

I do often wonder if eds3 keeps the alias list in his head, a piece of paper, or on his computer somewhere.

I like the idea of aliases, too, but it seems too hard to make up the names and then keep track of them. I would probably use a list.

I know one other person who used aliases for a while, based on things like their middle name, but he decided it was too hard keeping track of them and decided to switch to their real names.

I will probably have to have a list. Otherwise I will either forget or use an alias twice.

In his head, most likely. If it were on his phone, it'd be no use whatsoever.

aliases
I keep a master list of aliases on my laptop, but I keep most of them in my head. I try to choose aliases based on a simple set of rules:

1) a person's livejournal name is automatically their alias.
2) if they have no livejournal name, I try to choose something about them for an easy mnemonic- for example, the woman I call Caledonia is a fan of all things Scottish (would that be Hibernophile?), and the fellow I call Stanley is a great fan of the films of Stanley Kubrick.
