Fibonacci primes

I finally got my Fibonacci prime finding program like I wanted it. It now updates a web page, so that I can track its progress from anywhere. I still need to make the Fibonacci numbers wrap properly in Internet explorer, lynx does it properly! In the process of robustifying my Fibonacci prime finder, I acquired a third PC that is dedicate to running the program. It didn't come with a keyboard, mouse, or monitor, so I installed FreeBSD on it, and am running it headless.

FreeBSD has been a pleasure to use so far. Installation was very straightforward, and their web site is well organized. I would recommend it to anyone interested in running a *nix system. I also like their license much better than the GPL. You might notice the slight difference in length.

CLN vs NTL
Did you investigate CLN as a bignum library? I ask because I'm investigating GiNaC as an algebra system, and it uses CLN. I'm just curious how it compares to NTL.

Re: CLN vs NTL

To be honest no. I just grabbed the first bignum package I ran across. NTL was particulary attactrive to me for three reasons though

  1. It uses a C++ interface

  2. It is specifically geared for number theory

  3. It uses gmp underneath

If CLN uses gmp (or something like it) underneath the hood, then it is probably fine. I wanted gmp, because it is hand tuned assembly geared towards speed. NTL is up to 10 times faster with gmp than without it. NTL can be built with or without gmp, the default is with gmp on a *nix system.

I hope this answers question.

Re: CLN vs NTL

I just looked at CLN, and it does use gmp. In fact it looks almost identical to NTL in its feature set. I would bet that they are fairly even.
