A Scanner Newly

I got a new scanner today, and I have started doing what I have put off for far too long. Scanning in my old photos, so that I would have them in an electronic format. The going is slow, but I figure if I scan some everyday I should finish before I die. If anyone has any tips to help speed up the process I would appreciate them.

I also noticed that dust gets on the flatbed, no matter how hard you try to prevent it. I am going to have to figure out the best, and cheapest way to clean it since I want to scan a large amount of items.

Lastly the model is an Canon 8600F. So far I have liked it, and it seems to work reasonably well. It even came with some OCR software, which did great on typed documents, but totally barfed on a page I had handwritten. The software should not feel too bad though, my friends cannot read my handwriting either.
