Black Beans

I am not sure when it became trendy to start serving black beans in the place of pinto beans, but I sure do hate them. They're smaller, tougher, and to me less tasty. I guess they must have some environmental or health benefit, since the people of Austin seem to love them so much.

They were brought to my attention once again, because I ate at La Salsa. Overall the food was fine, but I don't think they even mentioned that their beans were black beans, instead of the good old pinto. They may have posted it somewhere on the menu board, but it certainly was not obvious.

What do you think of the black bean?

As you already know, I love black beans (BBs). To me, they have a firmer, robust, earthy taste that I prefer. Perhaps it is a texture issue for you since the firmness seems to be one of the qualities that you don't like about BBs. I don't like pintos because of their mushy texture and plain taste. I have not heard that BBs are more nutritious than pintos. I think they are traditionally served in Central American foods more than Mexican but you are right that in Austin they are served in Tex-Mex restaurants, too. Yay for BBs!
